Color quality - Eizo FlexScan S2031W

Color inversion

There exists a quite noticeable level of color inversion, as can be seen from the picture. Ideally, all items should look exactly the same and have apparently the same height. But it can be noticed on the left picture that the items in the middle are darker and have less height, and on the right picture the items on the left side are brighter and are apparently higher. All higher items are displayed incorrectly

Another problem is visible on the test picture: dark grays are too dark compared to required brightness level. This can be spotted as a visible line separating each item in half.

Quite noticeable inversion.

Viewing angles

Viewing angles are very good, with only a slight contrast reduction at angles, which is mostly unnoticeable. Even when just slightly peeking from the edge, the picture is perfectly clear.

There is some glow from the corner angles, but this is within tolerance tolerated. The glow is blue/purple in color.

When viewing from front, left, right, up or down, the picture is almost perfect and the glow is not noticeable.

When viewing from left up, there is a gray glow, but it is hard to notice and not distracting at all.

Glow is most noticeable on dark images, but only from extreme angles and it is low enough not to be distracting. Color and brightness of the glow are exaggerated on above pictures.

Gamma curve and colors

Gamma correction test on Eizo S2031W

Slight imperfections noticeable in the color curve..

Color curves are good, but imperfections can be noticed. There is a slight mismatch at the bottom part of color curves. As it was said before, dark grays are too dark, which is visible on the second picture.

Since Eizo S2031W offers 3 gamma exponent settings (1.8, 2.0, 2.2), we wondered whether color curves are matched exactly to those exponents instead to sRGB standard color curve, which we use for our tests. But changing the test images to exactly match 2.2 gamma exponent curve also resulted in some imperfections.

The imperfections are reasonably low and we can still say that colors of this monitor are accurate (if viewed exactly from front, because they become inaccurate due to color inversion, as mentioned above).

The monitor features a built-in sRGB mode, which is somewhat brighter than custom mode (80 cd/m2 at 0% brightness), and sets white point to D65 fairly accurate.

Upper part of the test picture, zoomed and brigtened, so that mismatch at dark levels can be spotted.

Custom mode will match D65 at default options, with 6500K color temperature and all three color channel biases set to 100%. Color temperature can be changed in steps of 500K. Color temperature settings are fairly correct.

We have to warn here that changing color temperature away from 6500K or changing color channel biases will result in some unwanted overdrive effects, for example a color tint appearing on moving high contrast pictures, or when dragging text.

Grayscale

We are quite impressed with ability of this monitor to display accurate gray colors, and to separate them visibly. Even the darkest grays are visible and clearly separated. There is only a slight imperfection, a tiny bit of red tint present in some grays, which is why this monitor didn't receive a perfect mark for color accuracy.

Dark grays

Very accurate dark grays.
