Overview - Eizo FlexScan S2031W

Relatively high price for a relatively small size. So, where is the catch? The catch is that this is a good monitor. You will not regret buying it. The quality of this monitor can simply not be compared to the sub $300 market segment, it is just too obvious that this monitor is better.

There are not many competitors to this model. HP LP2065 comes to mind first, it is somewhat cheaper and the specification's look similar

Since this is a monitor for the professionals, in this review we will have to be extremely meticulous and critical. Well, we intended to have high standards for reviews anyway.

First, we have to warn about very small pixel pitch, which translates into high resolution. This can be good because it offers additional precision in drawing lines and rendering text. But it also necessitates a higher DPI setting for this monitor. Windows operating systems and many programs written for it have some problems with increased DPI, for example, many interface elements may not render 100% correct or may render too small.

To wrap it up, we recommend the following settings:

  • In Display Properties/Appearance/Font size: set to Large
  • In Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/DPI setting: 120 DPI

That will make the text big enough. Of course, as for any LCD monitor, we highly recommend enabling ClearType.

High resolution can sometimes be bliss, and sometimes a pain. When surfing the web, you should know to use Ctrl-+ to increase the DPI in most browsers if the text is too small to read.

Out of the box, the monitor is preset to contrast setting of 50%. Brightness is set to 100%, which is too bright. There are many preset modes. sRGB mode at 0% brightness offers a comfortable 80 cd/m2.

We recommend using the custom mode for highest possible versatility. At 0% brightness, this mode offers brightness as low as 50 cd/m2 and at 31% brightness you can achieve the working office standard of 120 cd/m2.

'BrightRegulator' option is also available which will automatically adjust the brightness for you, depending on the environment conditions. We found this feature extremely useful.

Very small and not very pleasant to push menu buttons are on the bottom part of the frame. There are two buttons to change the speaker volume, one button for input scan, one for presets, the menu button 4 cursor buttons, and on/off button. Very small Eizo logo is on the bottom left.

The stand offers swivel, tilt, height and rotate functions.
